Carol singing in Suckley, Worcestershire

Traditional carol singing around the village

A group of singers is visiting Worcestershire to sing carols in the village of Suckley on the evening of Saturday 20 December 2008. You're welcome to join us, either for just the singing or for the weekend. We'll be a mixture of local people and singers from London. We've done this before - in December 2006 - and it was very successful and great fun. This year we'll be singing to raise money to help feed children in a famine-stricken area of Tanzania.

Helping Masasi Diocese in Tanzania

We'll be singing and collecting money to help the local church's appeal for funds to feed children in the famine-stricken Masasi Diocese of Tanzania. Because of poor rains, farmers in the region have been forced to replant their seeds more than three times, but the seeds haven't grown, and most of them have no seeds left.

The plan is to help the schoolchildren in the area by getting food to them. This should keep them in education, improve their academic performance and also relieve the burden of feeding the children at home for the parents and guardians, who in turn will have time to work in farming or other productive activities.

Suckley and its neighbouring parishes of Alfrick, Lulsley, Leigh and Bransford have an existing connection with Tanzania. A previous priest-in-charge, Michael Westall, became Bishop of Njombe in Tanzania. This church benefice of villages in Worcestershire already supports a school and teacher in the Masasi Diocese, and is now raising funds to increase its support during this time of special need.

If you'd like to support this cause now, please get in touch, and we'll let you know how you can help.

Our carol singing weekend

The rough plan is to arrive on Friday evening 19th December, do some sightseeing on Saturday morning, take it easy in the afternoon, and then spend the evening singing, probably in the two village pubs - The Cross Keys and The Nelson - and at various houses in the village. If the weather is fine, we'll walk around the village, so please bring lanterns, torches and bright, warm, clothing. We'll provide music. On Sunday, we'll travel back to London.

If you're interested in joining us, or have any questions, please contact Adam Wolton (07950 678868) or Keith Bramich (020 8840 1564) as soon as possible. You can email us via the Suckley website contact page. We'll update this page with any further information.

If you'd like to hear us sing

Suckley is too big a village for us to visit every house, so if you'd like to hear us sing and to give some money to help feed the children in Masasi Diocese, please tell us beforehand and we'll make sure we visit you.

Transport to and accommodation in Worcestershire

There will be road transport from London, and we can also arrange to meet you from the nearest train station, which is Malvern Link (on the Hereford line out of London Paddington or Birmingham New Street).

The plan is to travel from London on Friday evening 19 December and stay until after lunch on Sunday 21st. It's also possible to travel to Worcestershire on Saturday morning if you make your own travel arrangements.

We have some accommodation booked - a rental cottage - for those from outside the area, with an option to extend it if more people want to come.

You're also welcome to organise your own accommodation. Some pointers to possible places to stay are shown below :
